Growing Pains

The assignment at I Heart Faces today is to chronicle your growth as a photographer and all the fun tips and tricks you've learned (and put into practice). Now it's that second part, the whole "put into practice" part that gets me. Half the time I am so flustered just trying to capture Jayci looking in the right direction that I dont have the time or wherewithal to actually adjust my camera settings properly. Luckily, I have learned a lot about photoshop and feel like I can do a better job of post-processing and "saving" even some of my worst shots!
Here's my BEFORE picture. It's from just a few days after the J was born - almost a whole year ago! (tear)
I still really love the picture (which might or might not have something to do with my adorable wee subject), but I do NOT love my black and white conversion. I feel like it needs more contrast or something. But I would also like to point out that this illustrates well another principle of my photography skillz - they are mostly based on pure dumb luck. Take enough shots and a few are bound to turn out well!

Here's another before shot from Jayci's first days of life. Look at the LACK of sparkle in her pretty blue (crossed) eyes!
And here are some of my AFTER shots. To be honest, they are still nowhere near where I wish they were - but at least I'm headed in the right direction!
I like this BW conversion much better - the high contrast is much more pleasing to my eye. As is the picture itself. Not that I could tell you why or what I did - I just like it ok?

This one is from my "bubble" shoot - I love her eyes in it, and I did some more funky photoshop stuff with it (to better showcase my skillz with the photoshop) **I would like to just take a quick sec and tell I Heart Faces THANK-YOU for all the tips, tricks and fun! Y'all rock. For realz.

Ok enough photography stuff. Forgive me while I get all introspective-like for a moment. The whole 'chronicle your growth' thing got me thinking about the other ways I have grown over this past year. Obviously it's been a year of change and transition for us (I mean, no biggie - we just had a BABY a year ago . . . ) Being Jayci's mom has stretched me, grown me, and irrevocably changed me. I have learned so much about myself through being a mom. I have had to rely on the Lord's strength, guidance and patience more than ever before in my life. I have learned what it means to balance work, family, ministry, and friends (um - still working on that one).

I also realized that I still have a lot of growing to do. Both as a photographer and as a mom. And even more than that, as a child of God. I need to spend more time with Him and allow His Truth to penetrate my heart and transform me every single day, something I haven't been particularly good at this past year. Thank goodness for grace!

  1. Oooh, I love the black and white conversion. Such a cute picture! Great improvement. :)

  2. That B&W is incredible! Love it!

  3. Beautiful...the entire post was beautiful! I really like your "after" black and white conversion...great improvement!

  4. Well first of all you're a wonderful mommy!!!!!!!!

I am jealous of your photoshop skills...I want to learn really I do but I have no idea where to start.

  5. Beautiul after shots! Who says you're not good at photography? :o) These shots are fabulous! Thanks for sharing.

  6. I totally agree with you on that B&W one. It is gorgeous, and just wouldn't have the same feeling in color. I love the contrast in it!

    Ashley ♥

  7. Oh WOW! What a difference! Be proud of yourself--you've come a long way!!

BTW, it was so funny seeing the blue (and crossed) eyes..haha.

  8. This made me cry a little. You are always such a blessing. And a burst of fresh air : )

  9. GREAT progression! Those blue eyes in the last pic are amazing! Thanks for your compliments on my blog :)

  10. I love the 1st "before" shot. It's such a cute pose and expression.

And the 3rd picture is AMAZING!

I heart Faces is amazing. I am so glad I found their blog!

  11. Can definately see BIG improvements in your capturing - even without p-p those afters would be way better :D That said that first little B&W baby shot is very cute and I think with a little extra 'what I know now' editing it has the making of a great shot - give it a go and see what you can do with it now - that's the challenge ;-)

The bigger 'after' B&W is simply stunning, and the one of J is super-cute!

I love this photo-road and I am glad to be on it - as I can tell you do too :D
Thanks for dropping by my blog too.
